Freelancer Confessions | What’s My Perfect Work Space?

When you tell friends that you’re considering on starting a freelance career, there will most likely be that one friend who says, “I’m so jealous! You get to earn money while working in sweats and lounging on your couch all day.”

Right. If freelancing were that easy, everyone would be doing it. It’s not until you actually try working in the comforts of your home that you realize how difficult it is to get things done, especially when your comfy bed is just a few steps away. Finding the ideal work space that encourages productivity includes a few non-negotiables that will help you get things done. Let’s see what these freelancers have to say about their perfect work spaces.

Rina, a content creator for a local real estate website, chooses a work space that is far from anything that could distract her. “I have to be away from any distractions – a couch, a bed, books, my phone, etc.” Freelancers often have to deal with varying work conditions from day to day, and if you need a lot of focus in your line of work, the challenge is to find quiet work environments devoid of anything that could side track you. “I’m the type of person who works straight. I need to be completely focused. And when I lose my momentum, mahirap na siyang hanapin ulit.”

For a music composer like Ean, he requires specific equipment and platforms for his work. “I can only work at home. In my room. Hindi movable ang aking workstation. It’s not necessarily ideal. Wala lang akong choice”. If there’s one non-negotiable for Ean, it’s fast internet. “I need 5 minute breaks every 30 minutes. ‘Di ko kaya mag-work derecho. Breaks consist of internet reads or surfs.” Some freelancers welcome breaks every so often, as a way to take a step back and refresh. Fast internet means you get to be more productive, even on your breaks, letting you get back to work sooner.

Richo Torralba is a Sun Life Financial Advisor who likes a little hustle and bustle while at work. “That’s why I work in coffee shops. I just put on earphones when I really need to focus and people watch during breaks in between.” Although an upbeat environment might seem counterintuitive for work that needs focus, some choose a more loose and casual feel when working and even entertain interactions. It can be energizing to hear insights from others, and it can be exactly what you need to get you out of a rut. Richo shares, “I love the energy in coffee shops because of the casual yet serious vibe.”

If you find yourself in a similar situation as any of the freelancers we spoke to, you just might find that coworking spaces or serviced offices are exactly what you’re looking for. These spaces exist for the sole purpose of providing any kind of work environment that freelancers prefer: private desk spaces for those who like it quiet, shared areas for those who like to interact with others, and essential work tools like fast internet, security and a fully stocked pantry. The best thing about coworking spaces is the peace of mind in knowing exactly where to head whenever you need to get work done.
